The Virginia History Lab

Posted on Mar 7, 2013

I am pleased to officially unveil the Virginia History Lab.

From the About Us page:

Our work at the Virginia History Lab is based firmly on the knowledge that history is not the past— history is the story we tell about the past.  Our mission is to find and share those engaging stories that bring the past to life, that teach, that inspire, and that make us think. We are dedicated to sharing those stories that will create and strengthen communities. We are especially committed to the preservation of stories that might otherwise not get told and might never have been documented. Powerful histories deepen our understanding of the past, help us to better appreciate the present moment, and shed a discerning light on the choices that create our future.

Simply put: at the Virginia History Lab, we make history. We create and engage audiences through oral histories, online magazines, video documentaries, multimedia websites, virtual classrooms, interactive museum exhibits and more. We are on television, on radio, in print and online. Our speaker series and public events bring people together off-line, face to face— to learn, to discuss, to reflect. We believe everyone has a story to tell. We value experience, perspective, integrity, and community.

VHL Project Teams research, record, write, interview, edit, produce, post and publish. Our work encompasses personal memoir,  corporate heritage or the multifaceted story of an entire city — whether here in Virginia or farther afield. We invite you to explore our current projects and learn more.

The President and Executive Director of the Virginia History Lab is Coy Barefoot, an award-winning and best-selling author, historian, popular speaker, radio and television host. Coy teaches history at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and was appointed by three Virginia Governors to the State Historic Records Advisory Board.

The VHL is a Virginia Nonstock Corporation with 501(c)(3) status pending. Our work is supported by the generous donations of those who believe in the power of history to enrich lives and to strengthen community. Please take a moment to invest in our projects by donating to the Virginia History Lab. We sincerely appreciate your support.
